Farmers dissatisfied with the changes in government subsidies for the agricultural sector continued Wednesday to block major regional roads in Serbia's northern province of Vojvodina.

Farmers dissatisfied with the changes in government subsidies for the agricultural sector continued Wednesday to block major regional roads in Serbia's northern province of Vojvodina.

Vojislav Malesev, president of one of the agricultural associations which organized the protest, told Tanjug that there are over 6,000 tractors on roads across the province and that the number is rising, urging people not to use roads unless absolutely necessary.

"All of Vojvodina is blocked because the Ministry of Agriculture refuses to listen to our appeal and the government refuses to honor the promises it made to agricultural producers late last year," he said noting the protesters have also sent a message to Serbian President Boris Tadic asking him to meet with representatives of agricultural associations.

Association of Agricultural Producers of Vojvodina Chairman Miroslav Kis told Tanjug that that the number of tractors which "the police has stopped on roads across the province, and in other parts of Serbia" has reached between 8,000 and 10,000 and continues to grow.
