Serbia Movie Weekend held in Washington

The event “Serbia Movie Weekend” was held on November 19 and 20 at the Goethe Institute in Washington, DC. All films had English subtitles and admission was free.

The latest Serbian production movies were screen at an annual event organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Washington DC, USA.

The audience could “The Woman with the Broken Nose” (Zena Sa Slomljenim Nosem) by director and screenwriter Srdjan Koljevic, “Skinning” (Sisanje), directed by Stevan Filipovic, “White White World - The Miners' Opera” (Beli Beli Svet - Rudarska Opera) by Oleg Novkovic and “Flashback” (Flesbek) from director Aleksandar Jankovic.

Milena Garfield of West End Productions, the producer of “White White World,” a movie about a grim life in the town of Bor, southeast Serbia, and the lack of future for the local people, has said the festival is significant as it is showing the US audience that Serbia has an interesting and quality movie production.

It is very good that the Serbian Embassy has chosen to present Serbia's culture through movies, Garfield told Tanjug. Movies are a language that everybody can understand and culture is important in showing the exciting and European Serbia, she added.

Serbia Movie Weekend was attended by Serbian Ambassador to the United States Vladimir Petrovic, representatives of Washington's artist and media scene, including Washington Post's reporters, and representatives of the local Serb diaspora.
