Publishing house "Makedonska Rec" has released scientific-travel book "Mazedonien" (Macedonia) by German naturalist, professor Franz Theodor Doflein (1873-1924), one of the greatest German zoologists, who explored Macedonia in 1917 and 1918.
The book is the first scientific work on Macedonian flora and fauna. It registers for the first time almost the entire biodiversity at the country's territory. "Mazedonien" also contains 296 photographs, drawings and other graphic articles, most of which developed by the author.
In the course of World War I, Doflein was among the most significant members of the so-called Macedonian Commission, comprised of 30 Germans and 6 Bulgarians, tasked with exploring and studying Macedonia, which was at that time the least familiar European territory for Germany and Europe in general.
The commission was comprised of archaeologists, geographers, geologists, ethnologists etc, who were supposed to compile an encyclopedia from the collected materials. However, it was not released due to Germany's defeat, but this book emerged from the commission's work.
