A tanker loaded with about 2,400 tons of sulfuric acid capsized and sunk early on Thursday on the Rhine river between Koblenz and Mainz in Germany, and two crew members are missing, while two others are rescued, news agencies reported, citing the statement of the shipping office in Bingen.
The accident occurred near St. Goarshausen at 4 a.m. on Thursday, and the cause is still unknown.
Luckily, the vessel is not damaged and the dangerous load did not leak into the river, experts claim.
The ship belonged to a German company and was on its way from Ludwigshafen in southwestern Germany to Antwerp in Belgium.
The accident happened near the well-known Loreley cliff, named after a nymph from German mythology who lured sailors into death by singing and sunk their ships, agencies recalled.
According to the AP Agency, rescuing teams are working to secure the dangerous load in the tanker and to find the two missing crew members.
