Effect of new technologies leading to improvement of existing and introduction of new products in payment systems, both locally and globally, are the topics of the 16. International Conference of Clearing Institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, held October 12-15 in Ohrid.

National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia (NBRM) Governor Dimitar Bogov expressed satisfaction Thursday that the annual gathering of clearing and banking systems from Central and Eastern Europe is held in Macedonia.

"Macedonian banks follow the latest global technological trends. The national bank also plays a significant role by prescribing high standards that banks need to meet. This represents an expenditure for banks, but is necessary for the security and efficiency of banking systems", said Bogov.

Pertaining to the crisis in Greece, Bogov assessed the situation is serious but under control.

"European politicians hold it under control, a solution is being found. I believe that there will ultimately be a controlled bankruptcy in Greece, accompanied by additional capitalization of European banks. This is necessary because European politicians will not allow the development of a new banking crisis", stressed the NBRM governor.

He claimed that Macedonian banks are stable and highly liquid.

"They are not exposed to state debt towards most risky eurozone states. Macedonian banks are not exposed to Greece. Deposited funds are placed with Macedonian economy, to Macedonian companies, Macedonian citizens. Therefore, we do not expect a transfer of negative effects to Macedonian banks. NBRM is monitoring the situation, ready to assist banks if necessary, although we believe their liquidity is excellent, meeting all emerging needs", said Bogov.

The Ohrid conference focuses on the local payment system of the Republic of Macedonia, process of implementing the SEPA standard in European countries, issues such as reachability and accessibility, as well as developing economies round the world, the BRICS – group (the influence of payment systems as facilitator, stabilizer, or an obstacle on the way of development), and the role of global payment system players.

Host of this year's conference, Clearing House KIBS Clearing Interbank System, said speakers include leading persons from payment regulation bodies, as well as the regional central banks, banking industry, payment infrastructures, consulting and outsourcing companies.
