Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European integration Bozidar Djelic said the cooperation protocol between Serbia and Baden-Wuerttemberg, which was signed Wednesday in Stuttgart, is a chance to attract major investments from the German federal state.

Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European integration Bozidar Djelic said the cooperation protocol between Serbia and Baden-Wuerttemberg, which was signed Wednesday in Stuttgart, is a chance to attract major investments from the German federal state.

After the signing, Djelic told Tanjug the protocol includes plans for several projects, the main ones being in the automobile industry, electronics and IT.

"Now Serbia needs to make an effort to draw in investors from the German federal state which has one of the most successful economies in Europe," Djelic said, noting that Baden-Wuerttemberg has only invested EUR 10 million in Serbia to date.

"When we compare this to the EUR 1.6 billion Germany as a whole has invested, we see there is enormous potential," he added.

Djelic also talked about two major infrastructure projects Serbia and Baden-Wuerttemberg should realize together.

"The first is to go before Brussels together to apply for European funds for the construction of a high-quality railway from Stuttgart to Istanbul and we expect this will be financed in part from the next EU budget cycle and the infrastructure fund for connecting our continent," Dejlic said, adding the second project is the construction of a multimodal port on the Danube river near Belgrade.

The deputy prime minister said there is room to further cooperation with Baden-Wuerttemberg in the field of science and technology, noting as an example the expert group at the Belgrade University School of Physical Chemistry which will cooperate with German universities in Ulm and Karlsruhe on lithium battery development.

Djelic added cooperation will also continue in arts, tourism and security.
