In Gazimestan, Kosmet, KFOR will hand over tomorrow the security of that monument to the Kosovo police.

In Gazimestan, Kosmet, KFOR will hand over tomorrow the security of that monument to the Kosovo police.

The decision was adopted by the NATO Council. The official handover will be attended by KFOR, EULEX and Kosovo police representatives.

The Serbian Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija demanded of KFOR yesterday to continue securing Serb sanctities in Kosmet and reconsider the decision to hand over the security of Gazimestan to the Kosovo police.

In 1389, Gazimestan was the site of the historic Battle of Kosovo, between the Serbian and Turkish army.

The Serbian Army was defeated then, but the battle, that marked the fall of the strong Serbian medieval state, became the foundation of the Serbian state-forming tradition.

In memory of the Battle of Kosovo, a monument was built in Gazimestan in 1953 and was mined and demolished by Albanian extremists in 1999.
