Top Kosovo officials on Aug. 16 urged U.N. members to dismiss a proposed resolution on Kosovo submitted to the international organization by Serbia, on July 28.
Press releases were issued from the offices of Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu and Premier Hashim Thaci that letters were dispatched to all U.N. members, requesting them to reject Serbia's resolution as "an unnecessary act."
The letter, sent also to members of the Islamic Conference, Arab League, the Caribbean Community, the Conference of American States, the Council of Europe and other organizations, reads that Belgrade's initiative is an unnecessary criticism of the U.N.'s highest court, which one month ago ruled that the declaration of Kosovo's independence was legal.
As part of the new trend in thinking after the ruling of the International Court of Justice, which confirmed the legality of Kosovo's declaration of independence, we ask all U.N. members to oppose the Serbia-sponsored resolution as a needless step and unacceptable criticism of the ICJ, the letter stated.
The letter was also sent to EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
Kosovan officials also asked for recognition of Kosovo's independence from countries that have not recognized it.
In a proposed resolution sent to the U.N. General Assembly, Serbia said "unilateral secession is not the way to statehood," nor the path to resolving territorial differences.
Kosovo's independence has been recognized by 69 countries, 22 of which are EU members.
