Boris Tadic, a presidential candidate and the leader of the Democratic Party (DS), said at the convention of the 'Choice for a Better Life' coalition in the southern Serbian city of Nis Friday that the May 6 elections would decide the future of the country and every of its citizens.

“The elections that are coming are very important because there is no doubt that Serbia will change after May 6, but the question is whether the change will be for the better or for the worse,” Tadic said.

“Today, Serbia has the elections to decide important topics such as its future, taxes, political reforms, establishment of the rule of law and legal state, and greater birth rate. These issues affect all European countries. We have solved our internal conflicts. There are still some individuals who threaten with violence, but not on the broader societal level. Serbia is now respected in the region, cooperating with everyone and its citizens can proudly travel around the world,” he said.

Tadic said that May 6 would be a day of great feast of democracy and freedom, but also a decisive moment in Serbia's history, it would be crucial to the way Serbia would look like in 2012, in 2014 and in 2020.

“The elections will define the character of our country, that is, whether we will live freely, proudly, or in a country full of burden and under great pressure. Our goal is - a better life, peace, stability and security for our citizens,” said the DS leader.

He stressed that unlike others, he was not wont to say that he would resign if anyone pressurized him around an issue, but would seek a solution instead.

“My attitude is - if anyone ever makes it imperative that I should give up on Kosovo, I will continue searching for a solution and will not stop defending the identity of our country. To give up would have been the easiest thing to do over all these years,” he said.

Tadic announced that the fight against corruption would be a major priority and called for conducting a full check of the property owned by every politician in the country, starting from his own.
