Homen said the Serbian government had firm guarantees Germany would support giving Serbia candidate status and a starting date for accession talks if Serbia accomplished everything required by the Action Plan.

Serbian government press coordinator Slobodan Homen said Thursday that Serbia should not take as absolute the statements of some European parliamentarians that a country with a territorial dispute could not join the EU.

"I really think at this stage we should not take anyone's statement as something set in stone and an absolute condition, especially when it is a statement from certain MPs," Homen told a news conference held after a government session, commenting on the position expressed by German MPs that Serbia had to recognize Kosovo if it wanted to join the EU.

Homen said the Serbian government had firm guarantees Germany would support giving Serbia candidate status and a starting date for accession talks if Serbia accomplished everything required by the Action Plan.

"Right now everything is up to us, if we fulfill our obligations, we will get a positive result," Homen said.

It is normal for different parliamentary groups to have different opinions on EU policy, just as parliamentary groups in Serbia have different views on Serbia's European integration, Kosovo's status and other important issues, he explained.
