Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballe (80) will perform in the Belgrade Arena on November 6 as part of her farewell tour.

This will be the last chance for audiences to hear live one of the greatest opera singers of all time, as she has announced her retirement after the tour, the organizers said.

This will ever be a very nice way of rounding off a musical career that lasted 56 years, said Caballe, nicknamed La Superba. Caballe's international fame began with a role in the opera Lucrezia Borgia by Donizetti at Carnegie Hall in 1965. She quickly became one of the leading sopranoes singing the leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, Arena di Verona, London Covent Garden, Milan's Scala and others.

Her vast repertoire of close to 90 different roles has not been reached by anyone else so far. Caballe is also UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, has established a foundation to help children in need and often organizes charity concerts.

Wider audiences knew her for her work with pop singer Freddie Mercury from Queen, with whom she recorded the song Barcelona in 1988, which later became the anthem of the summer Olympic Games held in that city in 1992. The concert in Belgrade Arena will be conducted by famous Spanish conductor Jose Collado.
