Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet adopted the decision, which will now go before the lower house of the German parliament - the Bundestag, due to the improved security situation in Kosovo, according to the media.

The German government passed a decision Wednesday to extend the mandate of its troops in Kosovo by one more year.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet adopted the decision, which will now go before the lower house of the German parliament - the Bundestag, due to the improved security situation in Kosovo, according to the media.

The Bundestag will debate the decision towards the end of May, and the final position should be adopted on June 8.

The decision is expected to pass with an overwhelming majority. With around 1,100 soldiers, Germany is the biggest contributor to the KFOR contingent, the media remind, noting that by the end of the year the number of Bundeswehr members serving in Kosovo should go down to around 900.

The Bundeswehr's mandate in Kosovo started in 1999, and this is the German army's second largest military mission abroad, after Afghanistan.
